Braces Survival Guide
Everything you need to know to stay comfortable and keep your treatment on track.
What to Expect with New Braces
It’s normal to feel soreness for a few days after your braces are placed or adjusted.
This improves quickly as your mouth gets used to the new appliances.
Wax, soft foods, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help.
Foods to Avoid
These foods can break brackets or bend wires, slowing down your progress.
- Sticky foods (caramel, taffy, gum)
- Hard foods (nuts, hard candies, ice)
- Chewy foods (bagels, licorice)
- Crunchy foods (chips, popcorn, pretzels)
- Raw carrots and apples (unless cut into small pieces)
How to Keep Your Braces Clean
Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Angle your brush above and below the brackets to clean around wires.
Floss daily using a floss threader or orthodontic flossers to get between your teeth.
Troubleshooting & Quick Fixes
“My bracket or wire is poking me.”
Try placing orthodontic wax over the area to reduce irritation.
If a wire slides out, gently tuck it back with a clean pencil eraser.
If discomfort continues, call our office.
“My bracket came loose.”
No worries! This is not an emergency. Avoid chewy foods and call us to schedule a repair appointment.
“My teeth feel sore.”
Mild soreness for the first 2–3 days is normal. Soft foods and over-the-counter pain relievers help.
“My rubber bands snapped.”
Replace them with new ones. If they continue snapping, let us know during your visit.
Stay Consistent
Braces do take work. Brushing, flossing, and elastic wear are critical! You can do this!
Keep Appointments
Missing adjustments can delay treatment. Keep your appointments on track.
