Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from our patients and their families.

Whether you’re considering braces for your child or exploring treatment options for yourself, we want you to feel confident and informed.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontists complete additional training after dental school to become experts in braces and bite correction.

Orthodontists are trained to treat bite problems, crowding, spacing, and jaw alignment issues. Proper alignment can improve your smile, dental health, chewing function, and long-term comfort.

Orthodontists complete at least 2 years of training beyond dental school to become a specialist. Orthodontics is their focus, it’s all they do all the time. Dr. Baird is an orthodontic specialist. He’s ready to help.

Braces and clear aligners can correct:
• Crowding and spacing
• Overbite, underbite, and crossbite
• Open bite
• Rotated or misaligned teeth
• Jaw alignment issues

You may experience mild pressure or soreness for a day or two after braces are placed or adjusted. This is normal and temporary. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually help.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic checkup around age 7. Early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment, but it helps us catch developing issues.
